What's an easy way for a beginner to play along to this? I was just using the root notes and trying to keep time.
Start learning the chord tones and with that learn how to walk bass
Excellent. Even for a noob moron like me it's fun to play along to. I was just using the "box" shape and starting on the root note.
This made my evening! Had some frustrating bass drills, but got locked in to this and has some fun to finish. Pretending I had hair and channelling Deep Purple. Thank you.

Pop grooves are the genre we are best at. Have fun and learn music!
Great fun. I slowed it down to .75 and noodled around with the root, 5th, 7th and octave. That's great for learning!
I think it is a very right way to practice to slow down the tempo first. When you get used to it, let's up the tempo and push your own limits.
This is a huge help. I'm just chugging along on the chorus (bottom half) but trying to play roots, fifths and octave during the verse parts (top half).
I think you are right in your thinking. I think we should start with a simple bass line. Let's try it over and over again.
